The frieze composition is based on an iconographic scheme dating back to at least the thirteenth century. Displaying a solid classical culture, the sculptor locks the figures in a closed and compact composition. Reducing the number of mourners is crucial in the final outcome of the composition. Limiting the number of actors is, moreover, strictly Orthodox; to distance himself from the Apocrypha and other non — canonical texts, common sources of inspiration for this sculpture theme. Julius Caesar was assassinated in Rome on the Ides of March (March 15), 44 BC. Characteristically, Gérôme has depicted not the incident itself, but its immediate aftermath. The illusion of reality that Gérôme imparted to his paintings with his smooth, polished technique led one critic to comment, “If photography had existed in Caesar’s day, one could believe that the picture was painted from a photograph taken on the spot at the very moment of the catastrophe.” More on this painting

Jean-Léon Gérôme (11 May 1824–10 January 1904) was a French painter and sculptor in the style now known as academicism. His paintings were so widely reproduced that he was “arguably the world’s most famous living artist by 1880.” The range of his oeuvre included historical painting, Greek mythology, Orientalism, portraits, and other subjects, bringing the academic painting tradition to an artistic climax. Holy Prophet Jeremiah (583 BC) is the author of the Old Testament book that bears his name and of the Book of Lamentations; and Baruch, his scribe and disciple, composed the Old Testament book that bears his own name.

Jeremiah was the son of Helkiah, of the tribe of Levi, from the city of Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. He prophesied for thirty years, from 613 to 583 BC.

Saints Processus and Martinian

Martinian and Processus were Christian martyrs of ancient Rome. Neither the years they lived nor the circumstances of their deaths are known. They are currently buried in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

According to legend, Martinian and Processus were were pagans and they served as guards at the Mamertine prison in Rome.

In this prison were held state criminals, among which Christians also were included.

Watching over the Christian prisoners and hearing also their preaching, Processus and Martinian gradually came to the knowledge of the true faith in the Saviour…
