Natalina “Lina” Cavalieri (1874-1944) was an Italian opera soprano singer, actress, and monologist. She was painted by the Italian artist Giovanni Boldini (acquired by Maurice Rothschild) and by the Swiss-born American artist Adolfo Müller-Ury (1862–1947). The latter is now the property of the Metropolitan Opera, the gift of Nicholas Meredith Turner in memory of his wife, the soprano Jessica Dragonette. Hers is the face that appears repeatedly, obsessively, in Piero Fornasetti’s designs. More on Lina Cavalieri

Giovanni Boldini (31 December 1842 in Ferrara, Italy – 11 July 1931 in Paris, France) was an Italian genre and portrait painter. According to a 1933 article in Time magazine, he was known as the “Master of Swish” because of his flowing style of painting. Boldini was born in Ferrara, the son of a painter of religious subjects, and in 1862 went to Florence for six years to study and pursue painting. He only infrequently attended classes at the Academy of Fine Arts, but in Florence, met other realist painters known as the Macchiaioli, who were Italian precursors to Impressionism. 

Moving to London, Boldini attained success as a portraitist. He completed portraits of premier members of society. From 1872 he lived in Paris, where he became a friend of Edgar Degas. He also became the most fashionable portrait painter in Paris in the late 19th century. He was nominated commissioner of the Italian section of the Paris Exposition in 1889, and received the Légion d’honneur for this appointment.

A Boldini portrait of his former muse Marthe de Florian, a French actress, was discovered in a Paris flat in late 2010, hidden away from view on the premises that were unvisited for 70 years. The portrait has never been listed, exhibited or published and the flat belonged to de Florian’s granddaughter who went to live in the South of France at the outbreak of the Second World War and never returned. A love-note and a biographical reference to the work painted in 1888, when the actress was 24, cemented its authenticity. The full length portrait of the lady in the same clothing and accessories, but less provocative, hangs in the New Orleans Museum of Art. More on Giovanni Boldini

Philip Krevoruck, (1919-1999)  was born January 26, 1919 in Fitchburg, MA. He was active/lived in New York, Massachusetts / China. He is known for abstract urban and industrial scene painting. Krevoruck completed 4 years of college prior to WWII and taught art. The artist is well versed in a variety of extraordinary styles. Particularly known for his WPA subjects, Krevoruck’s work revealed a realistic portrayal of American life, exposing the true conditions of the urban city, industrial work environments and the everyday scenes of working class Americans. Capturing something of the Belle Époque, Bellei painted a number of large canvases which feature elegant women, either set in glamorous interiors, such as In the theatre and Off to the Masquerade, or battered by the elements, such as Gust of wind  and A windy day. These works allow the artist to demonstrate his skill in depicting cloth and costume. More on this painting

Gaetano Bellei was an Italian Academic Painter who was born in 1857. He later died in 1922 in the same city. He enhanced his artistic talent by learning art from Adeodato Malatesta and Comrade of John Muzzioli. When he was 24 year old, he won the Retired Potetti due which he was able to visit Rome to study arts. One of his most notable masterpieces is Rizpah which he completed there.

He took part in many local exhibitions in Florence. Afterwards, he came back to his native city became a professor in the Institute of Fine Arts Designer Polite. He was a master of fine art and used to use palette as a bright, fresh and creative tool. He was also a brilliant portrait artist. He has held many art exhibitions throughout his life, one such notable art exhibition was held in London in 1822 at The Royal Academy. More on Gaetano Bellei

His colorful and rather theatrical period images of Venetian society, e.g. On the Balcony (1877; Private Collection), were quite different compared to delicate pastels and etchings of the courtyards, balcony and canals of modern Venice.

Eugene de Blaas’ paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy, Fine Art Society, New Gallery and Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery in London, and also at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. More on this painting

Edgar Degas (19 July 1834 – 27 September 1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist. He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in his renditions of dancers, racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.

At the beginning of his career, Degas wanted to be a history painter, a calling for which he was well prepared by his rigorous academic training and close study of classic art. In his early thirties, he changed course, and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter, he became a classical painter of modern life. More on Edgar Degas

Jorn Fox was exposed to art at an early age by his father, an art instructor and abstract painter. Even through Jorn had studied in College he believes that his real education came from many hours he spent painting in his studio. There his canvases offered him unlimited opportunities for expression, exploration and discovery.

The varied landscapes are reoccurring theme in Jorn’s works. He is currently working on a Series of impressionist Scene’s “The Road Series” — Figurative, Coastal, Landscapes, Jazz, Captured Moments. Indeed,though he has a signature characteristic elegance of style, each of his paintings are distinct from one another, as are the various locales, people,and moments that inspire them.

Working with palette knife and brush Jorn is able to evoke serenity and stillness in his works, simultaneously creating liveiness and motion. His striking use of color, much of it pure and thickly layered, exalts and even immortalizes what he chooses to depict. Jorn is frequently referred to as a California Impressionist, yet his work possesses a singular style in contrast to his French counterparts, displays an engaging sense of balance. More on Jorn Fox

The work depicts Klumpke’s companion, painter Rosa Bonheur. Klumpke was also a biographer for Bonheur’s life and work. Bonheur is depicted sitting at her easel and wearing her medal of the Legion of Honor. Bonheur is wearing a “long frogged coat” and a stiff white collar. In her hand is a drawing and on the easel is the beginning of a painting of three horses. More on this painting

Rosa Bonheur, born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur, (16 March 1822 – 25 May 1899) was a French artist, an animalière (painter of animals) and sculptor, known for her artistic realism. Bonheur was widely considered to be the most famous female painter during the nineteenth century.

Bonheur was born on 16 March 1822 in Bordeaux, Gironde, the oldest child in a family of artists. Her father was a landscape and portrait painter who encouraged his daughter’s artistic talents. By the time Bonheur was in her teens, her talent for sketching live animals had manifested itself, and—rejecting training as a seamstress—she began studying animal motion and forms. 

Her sketching visits took her to public places that were largely the domain of men, as well as her work in the studio, prompted her by at least the early 1850s to eschew traditional female clothing for the trousers and loose blouse of a male peasant. She obtained police authorization to dress as she did (1852).

She had two female partners in her lifetime; the first, Nathalie Micas, she grew up with and then lived with for forty years and the second, Anna Elizabeth Klumpke, came into her life after the death of her first partner. More on Rosa Bonheur


Anna Elizabeth Klumpke (October 28, 1856 – February 9, 1942), was an American portrait and genre painter born in San Francisco, California, United States. She is perhaps best known for her portraits of famous women including Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1889) and Rosa Bonheur (1898). 


Anna studied art at home, and in October 1877, moved with her family once more to Paris, where she was later enrolled in the Julian Academy (1883–1884). She spent many an hour copying paintings in the Musée du Luxembourg. She presented her first work at the Paris Salon in 1884, while still at the Academy, and she won the grand prize for outstanding student of the year. After completing her studies, she returned to the United States for a few years and taught in Boston. However, by 1889, she was back in Paris.


Intent on painting Bonheur’s portrait, she met Rosa Bonheur on October 15, 1889, under the pretext of being the interpreter for a horse dealer. The two women were soon living together at Bonheur’s estate in Thomery, near Fontainebleau, and their relationship endured until Bonheur’s death in 1899.


In 1940, at the age of 84, Klumpke published her own autobiography Memoirs of an Artist. She died in 1942 at the age of 86 years in her native San Francisco.[7] A memorial to her is at Neptune Society Columbarium, San Francisco, and she is buried alongside Rosa Bonheur at Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris. More on Anna Elizabeth Klumpke

Thomas Saliot was born in Paris, France, in 1968. He studied Graphic Design at the Met de Penninghen (Esag) for 3 years and opened his own gallery in le Marais in the historic district of Paris from 1990 to 2000. The young Alaide, daughter of Cristiano Banti, appears here in a spontaneous and confidential pose, which brings to mind the familiarity and the sentimental bond that joined her to the painter in these years. In 1885 Boldini stayed as guest of the Banti family (an Italian figurative painter of academic training, a leading figure in the movement of the Tuscan Macchiaioli) in the villa of Montorsoli where he made other portraits of Alaide and some sketches which he then left as a gift on his departure for Paris. More on this work

Alaide Banti modeled often, not only for her father but also for his the many painter friends. 


Boldini loved Alaide very much, and they certainly they had a liaison, but when he asked her in marriage to his Cristiano, she said no. Since then their relationships have became much colder …

Jane Stanhope, Countess of Harrington (née Fleming; 23 May 1755 – 3 February 1824), was a society hostess and heiress who served as a lady of the Bedchamber to the British queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

Jane Fleming became engaged to Charles Stanhope, Viscount Petersham, a war hero who had recently returned from North America to England. Lord Petersham became Earl of Harrington on his father’s death the following April.

The new Countess of Harrington was soon praised for generosity, as she immediately settled the debts her husband had inherited from her father-in-law. The money she brought into the marriage also enabled Lord Harrington to raise an infantry regiment, with which the couple departed for Jamaica in 1780. When they returned the next year, Lady Harrington became noted for her fashion sense and physical attractiveness.

Ferdinand Bol (24 June 1616 – 24 August 1680) was a Dutch painter, etcher and draftsman. Although his surviving work is rare, it displays Rembrandt’s influence; like his master, Bol favored historical subjects, portraits, numerous self-portraits, and single figures in exotic finery.


Ferdinand Bol was first an apprentice of Jacob Cuyp in his hometown and/or of Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht. After 1630 he studied with Rembrandt, living in his house in Sint Antoniesbreestraat. In 1641 Bol started his own studio.


In 1652 he became a burgher of Amsterdam, and in 1653 he married Elisabeth Dell, whose father held positions with the Admiralty of Amsterdam and the wine merchants’ guild, both institutions that later gave commissions to the artist. Within a few years (1655) he became the head of the guild and received orders to deliver two chimney pieces for rooms in the new town hall designed by Jacob van Campen, and four more for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.


Around this time, Bol was a popular and successful painter. His palette had lightened, his figures possessed greater elegance, and by the middle of the decade he was receiving more official commissions than any other artist in Amsterdam.


Probably his best known painting is a portrait of Elisabeth Bas, the wife of the naval officer Joachim Swartenhondt and an innkeeper near the Dam square. This and many other of his paintings would in the 19th century be falsely attributed to Rembrandt. More on Ferdinand Bol

Achille Mollica (1832-1885) was an Italian painter of both canvases and ceramics. Achille was born to a family who manufactured maiolica ceramics. His father, Giovanni, had established the factory of “Mollica Ceramiche”, which employed Achille’s brothers, Ciro and Alessandro. Achille was however the greatest talent, studying ceramics at the Institute of Fine Arts of Naples.


He was a resident of Naples. In 1887 at Naples, he exhibited: a terra-cotta Amphora; in 1880 at Turin he exhibited some paintings: Ritorno and Ricordi del ballo; in 1881 at Milan, he exhibited I primi bocconi; Zobeide, bello studio di testa; Clorinda, painted on maiolica; at Rome in 1883: Diversi amori; Prima di un convito : Scala a Posillipo, a Turin, in 1884: Amore e Veduta a Posillipo. He also completed many portraits. He also exhibited in 1874 at Naples: Un tunisino; in 1875, La pesca and in 1876, Lo scacciapensieri. Princess Elena of Montenegro, or more commonly known as Queen Elena of Italy (8 January 1871 – 28 November 1952) was the daughter of King Nicholas I of Montenegro and his wife, Milena Vukotić. As wife of Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, she was Queen of Italy from 1900 until 1946 and Queen consort of the Albanians from 1939 until 1943.

On 28 December 1908 Messina was hit by a disastrous earthquake. Queen Elena helped with the rescuers. This helped to increase her popularity. During the First World War Elena worked as a nurse and turned Quirinal Palace and Villa Margherita into hospitals. To raise funds, she invented the “signed photograph”, which was sold at the charity desks. 

On 25 July 1943 Victor Emmanuel III had Benito Mussolini arrested. The king left Rome on 9 September to flee to Brindisi with the help of the Allies and Elena followed her husband in his escape. In contrast, on 23 September their daughter Mafalda was arrested by the Nazis and sent to Buchenwald concentration camp, where she died in 1944.

On 2 June 1946 a referendum resulted in 52 percent of voters favouring an Italian republic over the monarchy. The republic was formally proclaimed four days later, and the House of Savoy’s reign over Italy formally ended on 12 June 1946. Elena and Victor Emmanuel III went to Egypt, where they were welcomed with great honor by King Faruk, but forced to live the rest of their lives in exile. More on Queen Elena

Heywood Hardy (25 November 1842 – 20 January 1933) was a British artist, in particular an animal painter and painter of horse riding scenes. He also painted landscapes and portraits, especially equestrian portraits.

Heywood Hardy was born on 25 November 1842 at Chichester in Sussex, the youngest of ten children of the artist James Hardy senior. When he was 17 years old Heywood Hardy left the family home in Bath and removed to Keynsham near Bristol. His first two paintings, landscapes, were accepted for exhibition at The Royal Academy in 1864. In the same year he was appointed an Ensign in the 7th Somersetshire Rifle Volunteer Corps, a part-time position. Later that year he left Keynsham to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.Hardy spent much of his spare time copying paintings in the Louvre.


After his years of bohemianism in Paris, Heywood returned to England via Antwerp and by 1869 was living at Goring in Oxfordshire, near the bridge over the Thames.


His pictures of horse riding by the seashore and riders in 18th century settings are among his most popular paintings. He was much in demand to paint equestrian portraits and pictures of the most famous Hunts and foxhounds of his day.


Heywood Hardy was a founder member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, a founder member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society. More on Heywood Hardy

Paul Delvaux (23 September 1897 – 20 July 1994) was a Belgian painter famous for his paintings of female nudes. He was influenced by the works of Giorgio de Chirico, and was also briefly associated with surrealism.

The young Delvaux took music lessons, studied Greek and Latin, and absorbed the fiction of Jules Verne and the poetry of Homer. All of his work was to be influenced by these readings, starting with his earliest drawings showing mythological scenes. He studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, attending painting classes taught by Constant Montald and Jean Delville. The painters Frans Courtens and Alfred Bastien also encouraged Delvaux, whose works from this period were primarily naturalistic landscapes.

Delvaux’s paintings of the late 1920s and early 1930s, which feature nudes in landscapes. A change of style around 1933 reflects the influence of the metaphysical art. In the early 1930s Delvaux found further inspiration in visits to the Brussels Fair, where the Spitzner Museum, a museum of medical curiosities, supplying him with motifs that would appear throughout his subsequent work.

In 1959 he executed a mural at the Palais des Congrès in Brussels, one of several large scale decorative commissions Delvaux undertook. He was named director of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in 1965. In 1982 the Paul Delvaux Museum opened in Saint-Idesbald. Delvaux died in Veurne in 1994. More on Paul Delvaux

Currie met Dorothy Henry, a tall, attractive seventeen-year-old who modelled dresses at a Regent Street department store. Currie’s friend and patron, Michael Sadleir, remarked that she “was of flower-like loveliness, but lascivious and possessive to the last degrees. Her lure for men were irresistible, and Currie was of course utterly enslaved to her physical attraction, a fact of which she was well aware.” Currie’s wife discovered the affair in August 1911 and he abandoned her and his young son and set-up home with Dolly in Primrose Hill.

Dolly was poorly educated, unintelligent, and had no interest in art. She resented Currie’s absorption in his work, and attempted to make herself the centre of his life.” Haycock quotes a friend who later recalled that Dolly used the power of her beauty and sexuality “to goad him from abject desire to baffled fury and then, suddenly complaisant, to win him back again. This dangerous cruelty led to violent quarrels and blows.”

Dolly Henry left Currie at the beginning of 1914. He told Michael Sadleir he was contemplating suicide. He explained that the main sources of his anguish was Dolly faithlessness, and his fear that his period of artistic genius had passed.

In March 1914, Dolly agreed to return to Currie and they decided to move to Brittany. Dolly Henry took a flat in Paultons Square, just off the King’s Road. When Currie returned to London he heard rumours that Dolly had modelled for pornographic photographs and was spreading rumours about him in an attempt to ruin his career.

On 8th October 1914, Currie murdered Dolly Henry. The Times reported the following day. “A young woman, whose name is said to be Dorothy or Eileen Henry, was found fatally shot in a house in Chelsea… At a quarter to eight yesterday morning shots and screams were heard. The other occupants of the house ran upstairs and found the woman on the landing in her nightdress bleeding from wounds. In the bedroom a man partly dressed was discovered with wounds in the chest. He was taken to Chelsea infirmary, but the woman died before the arrival of a doctor.” Currie died three days later. More on Dolly and John

John Currie (ca. 1884 – 11 October 1914) was an English painter. Born in Staffordshire, the illegitimate son of an Ulster-Scottish father who was a ‘navvy’ working on the railways and an English mother, he worked as an artist in the Potteries, painting ceramics, before going to the Royal College of Art in 1905, and later becoming Master of Life Painting at Bristol. He married in 1907. In the summer of 1910 he briefly attended the Slade School of Art, where he joined the ‘Neo-Primitive’ group. The contemporary art collector Michael Sadleir described him as ‘blazing with genius’; others likened him to a character in a Dostoevsky novel.

Shortly before the start of World War I he traveled to France, painting for a time in Brittany. Currie had previously abandoned his wife and young son to begin a long and tempestuous affair with an attractive though unintelligent Irish model, Dolly Henry. (In full, Dorothy Eileen Henry, though sometimes written O’Henry). This ended with Currie shooting her dead at her Chelsea apartment; he then turned the gun on himself, and died in hospital a few days later. More on John Currie

Marie Breunig was born in humble circumstances in one of the crownlands of the monarchy and married a successful Viennese businessman. She was also a client of the Flöge sisters’ fashion salon and was already befriended with them at the time this painting was created. More on Marie Breunig

Gustav Klimt (July 14, 1862 – February 6, 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objets d’art. Klimt’s primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. In addition to his figurative works, which include allegories and portraits, he painted landscapes. Among the artists of the Vienna Secession, Klimt was the most influenced by Japanese art and its methods.

Early in his artistic career, he was a successful painter of architectural decorations in a conventional manner. As he developed a more personal style, his work was the subject of controversy that culminated when the paintings he completed around 1900 for the ceiling of the Great Hall of the University of Vienna were criticized as pornographic. He subsequently accepted no more public commissions, but achieved a new success with the paintings of his “golden phase,” many of which include gold leaf. More Gustav Klimt

After the death of Klimt, the writer and art critic Berta Tsukerkandl wrote in the Vienna newspaper Wiener Zeitung: “One of the greatest died. A simple hero. Quiet , tenacious fighter. Invincible. The Execution of Lady Jane Grey was enormously popular in the decades after it was painted, but in the 20th century realist historical paintings fell from critical favour and it was kept in storage. Restored and displayed again since 1975, it immediately once again became a highly popular work, especially with younger visitors.

Lady Jane Grey was the great-granddaughter of Henry VII of England and first cousin once removed to his grandson, the short-lived Edward VI. After Edward’s death she was proclaimed queen, being given precedence over Henry VIII’s daughters, Mary Tudor and Elizabeth. Two weeks after the death of her brother, Mary, who had the support of the English people, claimed the throne, which Jane relinquished, having reigned for only nine days. Jane, her husband Lord Guilford Dudley, and her father, were imprisoned in the Tower of London on charges of high treason. On Friday 12 February, Mary had Jane, then aged 16, and her husband beheaded. Her father followed two days later. More on Lady Jane Grey

Paul Delaroche (Paris, 17 July 1797 – 4 November 1856) was a French painter. He became famous in Europe for his melodramatic scenes that often portrayed subjects from English and French history. The emotions emphasised in Delaroche’s paintings appeal to Romanticism while the detail of his work along with the deglorified portrayal of historic figures follow the trends of Academicism and Neoclassicism. Delaroche aimed to depict his subjects and history with pragmatic realism.

Delaroche was born into a generation that saw the stylistic conflicts between Romanticism and Davidian Classicism. Davidian Classicism was widely accepted and enjoyed by society so as a developing artist at the time of the introduction of Romanticism in Paris, Delaroche found his place between the two movements. Later in the 1830s, Delaroche exhibited the first of his major religious works. His change of subject and “the painting’s austere manner” were ill-received by critics and after 1837, he stopped exhibiting his work altogether. At the time of his death in 1856, he was painting a series of four scenes from the Life of the Virgin.
