Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev was born in Astrakhan on March 7, 1878 into the family of a professor of philosophy, history of literature, and logic at the local theological seminary.

Between 1893 and 1896, Boris took private art lessons in Astrakhan. Subsequently, from 1896 to 1903, he attended Ilya Repin’s studio at the Academy of Arts in St. Peterburg. Concurrently he took classes in sculpture under Dmitry Stelletsky and in etching under Vasily Mathé.

In 1904, he traveled to Spain, in 1907 to Italy, and in 1909 visited Austria, France, and Germany, and again Italy. During these years he painted many portraits and genre pieces.

In 1909, Kustodiev developed the initial symptoms of the grave illness that in 1916 paralyzed the lower part of his body, thus confining him to his studio where he continued to paint, relying on memories from his boyhood and youth and on his imagination.

In 1923, Kustodiev joined the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. He continued to paint, make engravings, illustrate books and design for the theater up until his death on May 28, 1927, in Leningrad. More on Boris Kustodiev

Victorine-Louise Meurent (February 18, 1844 – March 17, 1927) was a French painter and a famous model for painters. Although she is best known as the favourite model of Édouard Manet, she was also an artist in her own right who regularly exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon. In 1876 her paintings were selected for inclusion at the Salon’s juried exhibition, when Manet’s work was not.

Meurent’s name remains forever associated with Manet’s masterpieces of 1863, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, which include nude portrayals of her. More on Victorine Meurent

Josh Honeyman lives near Blackheath close to the highest point of the Blue Mountains. He takes us there, into visionary landscapes, reimagining the world through a host of signs, symbols and haunting scenarios. Arcane narratives are suggested, ones steeped in myth, portents and divinations. There’s love, death, poetry, mystery, wizardry, far beyond anything the camera can offer. The fact that Honeyman is a highly skilled painter allows him to convince us of the validity of these alternative realms. Let’s go there, not all the time, but long enough to recognise that the human spirit is more than just a receptacle for the banal pragmatism and dull conventions of Western rationalism. Robert Hollingworth, 2019

Josh studied at the College of Fine Arts, Sydney. He has exhibited in a range of solo and group shows across Australia and in Los Angeles, USA in 2006.

Chris von Wangenheim was born in Breig, in what was then a war-torn East Prussia, in 1942. His father was an officer in the German Army who died in Soviet captivity in 1953. This tragedy would go on to inform his son’s dark nature. By this time von Wangenheim was living in the Bavarian mountains with his mother and sister and, inspired by a photographer living in the upstairs flat, had developed a burgeoning interest in photography. Von Wangenheim carried this fascination with him into adulthood. In 1965 he relocated to New York City to kickstart his own career. He got his start as an assistant for Harper’s Bazaar photographer James Moore, and as a result secured a few pages in the magazine…

Lidia Wylangowska: “My art tells my story. It’s a story of my world, of my thoughts and emotions entwined in an internal dialogue. And some of it can be expressed only through painting. It is incredible, how fairy-tales I heard once-upon-a-time, in my childhood actually influenced my life and defined who I am.

The technique I use in my works is changing and evolving as I do. There is a lot my very own inventions in it but the very base comes from Renaissance Masters. Masaccio, Leonardo da Vinci , Raphael are commonly considered to have pioneered the use of chiaroscuro to create the illusion of relief – notably in the modelling of the human body. Chiaroscuro modeling is supporting the effect of color. In order to use the under painting efficiently, I put the color transparently. The transparent layer of paint spread over the top of an opaque passage that has been given some time to dry. Light travels through the glaze and is reflected back off of the opaque layer below. The light in the painting constructed this way lit the color from the bottom. More on Lidia Wylangowska

01 Painting, The Art Of The Nude, Tom Wesselman’s Monica Sitting with Mondrian, with footnotes # 133

Tom Wesselmann, (New York, Ohio, 1931-2004)
Monica Sitting with Mondrian, c. 1989

Screenprint
41 x 27 in
Private collection

Mondrian refers to the artist whose painting is shown behind the model.

Wesselmann’s most famous series, “Great American Nude” (1961–73), channels the brazen energy of American advertising and features flat, faceless female figures whom the artist often situated among stars and stripes. More on this painting

The artist always refrains from developing the facial features of the sitters, as is the case in the work presented here. The attractive model Monica sits undressed and in a lascivious pose in front of one of the modern classics, a work by Piet Mondrian.

Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan (7 March 1872 – 1 February 1944), was a Dutch painter and theoretician who is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. He is known for being one of the pioneers of 20th century abstract art, as he changed his artistic direction from figurative painting to an increasingly abstract style, until he reached a point where his artistic vocabulary was reduced to simple geometric elements. More on Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan

Tom Wesselmann (1931–2004) was one of the leading American Pop artists of the 1960s. Departing from Abstract Expressionism, he explored classical representations of the nude, still life, and landscape, while incorporating everyday objects and advertising ephemera.

Wesselmann was drafted into the US Army in 1952, two years into the Korean War. During his military service, he learned—then taught—aerial photography interpretation, and began to draw cartoons about his experiences. Upon his return to his hometown of Cincinnati, he completed a BA in psychology at the University of Cincinnati and began taking classes at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. In fall 1956, he moved to New York City to study art at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. At Cooper Union, he met Claire Selley, who would become his wife and lifelong muse.

Living in Brooklyn, Wesselmann supported himself by selling cartoons to the Saturday Evening Post, “gag” magazines, and advertising agencies. In the late 1950s, he cofounded the Judson Gallery in the West Village with Marc Ratliff and Jim Dine. After completing his studies at Cooper Union, Wesselmann spent three years teaching high school art and math. During the evening, he continued to expand his own artistic practice, making small portrait collages.

Wesselmann is highly regarded for his Great American Nude series (1961–73), which combines sensual depictions of the female figure with references to art history and popular culture. Many of these lounging female subjects were painted in patriotic red, white, and blue. In the late 1960s Wesselmann created close-up views of the nude in the Bedroom Paintings (1968–83). More on Tom Wesselmann

Dora Lynnell Wilson (31 August 1883–21 November 1946) was a British-born Australian artist, Wilson was educated at Somerset School and Methodist Ladies’ College in Melbourne. From 1901–1906 she studied at the National Gallery.

From the 1920s onward she concentrated largely on street scenes, and in 1923 she was commissioned by Sir Baldwin Spencer to undertake a series of paintings of European landmarks, which saw her travelling around Europe for over two years. In 1928 these works were exhibited at the Beaux Arts Gallery, London, and the following year at Australia House. In the early 1930s she focused on historical scenes from Melbourne’s history.

Louis Anquetin (26 January 1861 – 19 August 1932) was a French painter; born in Étrépagny, France and educated at the Lycée Pierre Corneille in Rouen.

In 1882 he came to Paris and began studying art at Léon Bonnat’s studio, where he met Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The two artists later moved to the studio of Fernand Cormon, where they befriended Émile Bernard and Vincent van Gogh.

Around 1887, Anquetin and Bernard developed a painting style that used flat regions of color and thick, black contour outlines. This style, named cloisonnism by critic Edouard Dujardin, was inspired by both stained glass and Japanese ukiyo-e.

He eventually fell from the public’s eye after abandoning the modern movements, opting instead to study the methods of the Old Masters. Thus, Anquetin’s works following the mid-1890s, such as Rinaldo and Armida, were especially Rubensian and allegorical in nature. More on Louis Anquetin

Pegah Samaie is an American-Iranian artist who was born and grew up in Tehran, Iran. Pegah’s art moves through the shadow of her past life. She uses art as a tool to face the experiences she and other women have encountered in a culture dominated by patriarchal governments and households. Her early experiences in Iran changed her perception of the role of women in society; they motivated her and influenced her way of talking about women. Art is her voice to talk about her feelings and experiences…
