Martín Rico y Ortega (12 November 1833, El Escorial – 13 April 1908, Venice, Italy) was a Spanish painter of landscapes and cityscapes. Rico was one of the most important artists of the second half of the nineteenth century in his native country, and enjoyed wide international recognition.

Rico was born in Madrid and received his earliest formal training at the city’s Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where he studied under Jenaro Pérez Villaamil. In 1860, having been awarded a government-sponsored scholarship, Rico moved to Paris to continue his studies.

His landscapes depict the French and Swiss countryside in a fully accomplished Realist style. Toward the end of 1870, due to political and social unrest caused by the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War, Rico decided to leave France and return to his native Spain.

Rico moved to the southern city of Granada, joining Fortuny and his wife Cecilia, as well as the painter Ricardo de Madrazo. The three artists worked closely during this period, with the styles of Rico and Fortuny overlapping so much that their watercolors—a specialty for both artists—were often confused for one another. It was during this time that, through Fortuny’s influence, Rico’s paintings began to reveal a newfound sense of luminosity and color. His time in Andalucía was, according to his memoirs, one of his happiest, and also one of his most artistically productive periods. More on Martín Rico y Ortega

Karl Kaufmann (born 1843 in Neuplachowitz, Austrian Silesia; † 27. April 1905 in Vienna) was an Austrian landscape and architectural painter. Kaufmann was a student at the Vienna Academy. His studies in the European North (Norway), to Holland, Germany (Franconia, Danzig, Königsberg) and often to Italy (Naples, Rome, Venice) gave him the motives for his numerous landscapes, including a remarkable number of views of Venice.

From 1900 Karl Kaufmann constantly lived in Vienna. He often signed his works using pseudonyms. Among various other names, Byon, H. Carnier, W. Carnier, F. Gilbert, O. Halm, C.Charpentier, J. Holmstedt, Charles Marchand, R. Merkner, B. Lambert, E. Leutner, M. Heger, Hobart, L. van Howe / van Hove, R. Jäger, Laarsen, Lundberg, F. Marchant, J. Marchant, C. Poul, F. Rodek, J. Samuel Melton Fisher, RA (British, 1859-1939) studied at the Lambeth School of Art and Royal Academy Schools between 1876 and 1881, winning a gold medal and a travelling scholarship; travelling to Paris, he studied with Jules Bonnaffé. His work In Realms of Fancy was purchased by Chantrey Bequest in 1898 and later in his life he returned to portrait and figure painting, possibly for financial reasons. More on Samuel Melton Fisher

In this large canvas, Bernard combines an almost life-size representation of Venetians in the foreground, with the evocation of the City of the Doges in the background. The airy elegance of the Veronese colors of the women and children dressed in bright colors circulating on the bridgea. The architectural background is almost monochromatic, a kind of silvery blue. The children balance the sculptural silhouettes of the Venetians: a boy gracefully abandons himself to a gentle reverie while a little girl, near the right edge of the painting, seems completely absorbed in the contemplation of her doll. Friedrich Nerly or Federico Nehrlich (October 26, 1842 – 1919) was a german painter who specialized in seascapes.

Nerly was of Prussian nationality. He completed his first studies with his father, a well known landscape artist. He later enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice. In 1862–65 and in 1866, he served in the army. He visited the principal artistic cities of Germany: Düsseldorf, Weimar, Munich, and Dresden. In 1868, he traveled to Francia, Austria, Dalmatia, and Montenegro, and visited Rome, Naples, and Sicily.

Thomas Moran (February 12, 1837 – August 25, 1926) from Bolton, England was an American painter and printmaker of the Hudson River School in New York whose work often featured the Rocky Mountains. Moran and his family, wife Mary Nimmo Moran and daughter Ruth, took residence in New York where he obtained work as an artist. He was a younger brother of the noted marine artist Edward Moran, with whom he shared a studio. A talented illustrator and exquisite colorist, Thomas Moran was hired as an illustrator at Scribner’s Monthly. During the late 1860s, he was appointed the chief illustrator for the magazine, a position that helped him launch his career as one of the premier painters of the American landscape, in particular, the American West.

Moran along with Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Hill, and William Keith are sometimes referred to as belonging to the Rocky Mountain School of landscape painters because of all of the Western landscapes made by this group. More on Thomas Moran

Edward Pritchett (fl. 1828 – 1864) was a nineteenth-century English painter and man of mystery.

Nothing is known of Pritchett’s life; he has appropriately been described as “elusive.” He may have lived to 1879. Pritchett spent more than three decades living and working in Venice, producing admirable views of the city; he was one of a group of English artists who produced notable records of the scenes of northern Italy, a group that included John Wharlton Bunney, James Holland, the brothers-in-law Luke Fildes and Henry Woods, and, in a later generation, William Logsdail. Louis Abel-Truchet, 1857 – 1918, was an important French painter, etcher and lithographer in his lifetime. He was born in 1857 in Versailles. He is predominantly known for his paintings depicting Paris at the turn of the century, with cafés, theatres, shops, everyday life and fashionable Parisians forming an essential part of the subject matter.

He exhibited from 1891 in various salons and was a founding member of the Salon d’Automne and the Societe des Humoristes. He also exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, becoming a member in 1910.

Though influenced by impressionism, Abel-Truchet is also satirical at times and his work focused on the Belle Epoque, linking him with artists such as Galien-Laloue, Forain and Steinlen.

In 1914, aged fifty seven, he volunteered to fight in the World War One. He was to produce a series of lithographs depicting scenes from his experiences. He commanded a section of fighting troops during the war and was awarded the Legion of Honour and La Croix de Guerre. Abel-Truchet died in service in the last few months of the war. The Grand Canal in Venice, Italy forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. Public transport is provided by water buses and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by gondola.

One end of the canal leads into the lagoon near the Santa Lucia railway station and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin; in between, it makes a large reverse-S shape through the central districts of Venice. More Grand Canal

Giuseppe Borsato (1771 in Venice – 15 October 1849 in Venice) was an Italian. From 1791 to 1792, he studied with Agostino Mengozzi-Colonna at the Accademia di Belle Arti.
He painted interiors of churches, sometimes in the manner of Canaletto, but was also influenced by his contemporary, Vincenzo Chilone. Among his best known decorative works are those at St Mark’s Basilica and Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. In 1807, he and his student, Francesco Bagnara, decorated the Teatro La Fenice. He also painted frescoes in the Palazzo Zabarella during its renovation in 1818, alongside Francesco Hayez and Giovanni Carlo Bevilacqua.

In 1815, his paintings were used in a popular guide to the artworks of Venice, written by Giannantonio Moschini. In 1831, his lectures at the Accademia di Belle Arti were published by the Accademia as Opere Ornamentale. More on Giuseppe Borsato

Jack Lestrade was born in South West France, in Gascony, in 1932 He has always been attracted to traveling to special places to do what he likes the most, painting. Self-taught, he spent five years in Canada and more than forty years in the United States of America. He became well established as an internationally respected watercolor artist, as well as being featured in four watercolor books. He has participated in numerous “one-man shows” and his work is in many public and private collections around the world. Jack and his wife reside most of the year in the Lot region in South West France, dividing their time between France and the United States. He is a member of the Carmel Art Association. Piazza San Marco or St. Mark’s Square is the main public square in Venice. The Piazza is located in front of the great Byzantine church known as Basilica di San Marco. This Piazza is surrounded by shops, caffè’s and palazzi on three sides. According to local legend Napoleon called the Piazza San Marco “the drawing room of Europe.” More on Piazza San Marco

Melbourne artist, Brian Kewley, was born in 1933 about 100 metres from Hamptons bayside beach. He has lived, sailed, fished and painted there all his life. The subjects of his paintings include Elwood, Point Ormond, St. Kilda and Port Melbourne, for it is these locations that have inspired his art. Many are painted on the spot in an attempt to capture the light, movement and dazzle of the water. Other subjects, like Brighton Beach, have been painted from an aerial perspective. His subjects later extended to the Peninsula as far as Flinders and to the city of Melbourne. A veteran of more than 22 solo exhibitions since 1965, Brian Kewleys’ paintings evoke immense pleasure while they record the changes that Melbourne has undergone over past years. Santa Maria della Salute (English: Saint Mary of Health), commonly known simply as the Salute, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the city of Venice, Italy.

It stands on the narrow finger of Punta della Dogana, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, at the Bacino di San Marco, making the church visible when entering the Piazza San Marco from the water. The Salute is part of the parish of the Gesuati and is the most recent of the so-called plague churches.

In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the city’s deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death.

The dome of the Salute was an important addition to the Venice skyline and soon became emblematic of the city, inspiring artists like Canaletto, J. M. W. Turner, John Singer Sargent, and the Venetian artist Francesco Guardi. More on Santa Maria della Salut

eJulian Barrow was born in Cumberland but lived for most of his life in London. He studied in Florence with Pietro Annigoni, and was an inveterate traveler, painting views throughout the world.

Julian Barrow was described as “a country house painter par excellence” and his commissions for interiors and exteriors of country estates took him all over England, Scotland, Ireland, and America. He also painted many of the private clubs in London and New York. In 1977, for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, Barrow produced a painting of the House of Lords which now hangs at Westminster. Mike Bernard (born 1957) is an English painter. His highly textured semi-abstract paintings are often executed in mixed media incorporating collage and acrylics; he also brings an experimental approach to watercolour and oils. Regular subjects include coastal and street scenes in the English West Country and Italy. “What attracts me most is the pattern of buildings, boats and similar features in a scene. I build a painting by putting in blocks of colour to develop a pattern which is pleasing to my eye in colours which are harmonious, bringing in feelings of spontaneity, freshness and freedom.”

Bernard was born in Dover, Kent. He trained at the West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham, followed by postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy Schools. Since then he has exhibited at the Royal Academy summer exhibition, Mall Galleries, Royal Festival Hall and many other galleries in London and the provinces. He has also gained awards and prizes for his paintings.

Bernard lives and works in North Devon, having moved there in 2008 from Hampshire. He is a regular contributor to The Artist magazine. More on Mike Bernard

Rudolf Ritter von Alt (28 August 1812 – 12 March 1905) was an Austrian landscape and architectural painter. Born as Rudolf Alt, he could call himself von Alt and held the title of a Ritter (knight) after he gained nobility in 1889.

Born in Vienna, he studied at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna. Hiking-trips through the Austrian Alps and northern Italy awoke a love for landscapes, and he painted with his brush using watercolors in a very realistic and detailed style. In 1833, inspired by a visit to Venice and neighbouring cities, he also made a number of architectural paintings.

Alt demonstrated a remarkable talent for expressing certain peculiarities in nature. He managed to paint nature authentically by focusing on the different hues of sky, the colour-tone of the air and the vegetation. His later works came closer to Impressionism. His perspectives on architecture were interesting, and he often chose everyday objects to paint. The painting of interior views also became one of his strong points, giving him attention in Vienna.

He visited and worked for a while in Rome and Naples; after that he visited the lakes of Lombardy, then Galicia, Bohemia, Dalmatia, Bavaria and then returned multiple times to Italy. In 1863 he went to the Crimea to paint some views of an estate of the Empress, and in 1867 he went to Sicily.

Henry Martin Gasser, American (1909 – 1981)was born in Newark, New Jersey. He lived, studied and worked in New Jersey for his entire life. A Master at watercolor and oil his work consisted of, in his own words, “everyday subjects that are available to most of us-street scenes, back yards, trees, old houses, etc I looked for them in front of houses, in backyards, public parks, and elsewhere”. He also painted numerous harbor and fishing village scenes. His Paintings contain a great deal of what he called “solitary silence” created by chosen subject matter such as a “Coming Storm”, “Night in the Park”, “Shadows”… He felt that Design was very important and meant the difference between a mediocre work and a truly professional one. It is here where Gasser excelled, his work demonstrates a sense of composition that gained wide spread appreciation for his work.

He got his background in art studying at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art and the Grand Central School of Art. This was followed by study at the Art Students League of New York in the classes of Robert Bracman. He later studied privately under John R. Grabach. He is represented in over fifty museum collections and numerous important private ones as well. He served as Director of the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art from 1946-54 then continued lecturing and demonstrating for most of the remainder of his life. The Zattere was built in 1519 and first used as a landing dock for the delivery of timber used to construct ships and buildings, which gave the quay the name Zattere, Italian for raft.

The timber gone, the Zattere today is a spacious promenade that runs along the entire southern shore of Venice’s Dorsoduro District, from the Marittima and San Basilio all the way to the Punta della Dogana. Hercules Brabazon Brabazon (born Hercules Brabazon Sharpe; 27 November 1821 – 14 May 1906) was an English artist, accomplished in Turner-manner watercolours.

Brabazon was the younger son of Hercules Sharpe. Initially raised in Paris, he moved with his family to Oaklands, an estate near Sedlescombe, East Sussex, in 1832. He attended Harrow School, the École Privat, Geneva, and Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating with a B.A. in mathematics in 1844.

His father then wanted him to study law, but instead he left England and went to Rome to study music and art His father attempted to make him return by reducing his allowance, but in 1847, upon the death of his elder brother, he gained financial independence when he inherited family estates in Connaught, the will requiring that he change his surname to Brabazon. From then on he led a life of travel, art study and painting.

In 1858 he inherited Oaklands, whose management he left to his brother-in-law while he continued to travel – mostly in Europe, but with trips to Africa and India – always returning with his watercolours. Describing himself as living “for Art and Sunshine”, he viewed himself as a gentleman amateur, and did not show or try to sell his work until his mid-seventies.

With the encouragement of artist friends, particularly John Singer Sargent, he began to exhibit, first at the New English Art Club, followed by successful one-man exhibitions at the Goupil Gallery in Bond Street. He died at Sedlescombe in 1906, and is buried there More on Hercules Brabazon Brabazon

John Randall Bratby, (born July 19, 1928, Wimbledon, Surrey. — died July 20, 1992, Hastings, East Sussex), was a British painter who rose to prominence in the 1950s as a member of the Kitchen Sink School, a group of British social-realist artists who paralleled the literary Angry Young Men of the decade.

Although he was accepted at the Slade School of Fine Art, Bratby attended the Royal College of Art (1951–54). His first solo exhibition, mounted at the Beaux Arts Gallery in London (1954), gained him instant popularity. For many years after his artwork appeared in the motion picture The Horse’s Mouth (1958), he was identified in the popular imagination with the film’s protagonist, a bohemian artist. Bratby was particularly known for the feverish speed at which he worked and for the thick texture of his vividly coloured, Expressionistic paintings, into which he often incorporated everyday objects. His productivity did not decline with his popularity in the 1960s, as he continued to create thousands of sketches and paintings, including hundreds of portraits.
