VERA ROCKLINE, NUDE WITH NECKLACE; 01 Work, The Art Of The Nude, with footnotes # 97

VERA ROCKLINE, (1896 – 1934, Russian)
NUDE WITH NECKLACE

Oil on canvas
61.5 x 46.5 cm
Private collection

Véra Rockline (1896 – 4 April 1934) was a Russian post-impressionist painter. Rockline started her career in Moscow, studying in the studio of Ilya Mashkov, who considered her one of his most brilliant students. In 1918 she became an apprentice at Aleksandra Ekster’s studio in Kiev, Ukraine. Ekster, who personally knew Pablo Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire had great influence on Rockline’s initial style, also inspiring her creative and free painting spirit.
In 1918 and 1919, she exhibited at the 24th Moscow Artists Association Exposition, and in other gallery and association exhibitions. Also in 1918, she married a Mr.Rokhlin, from whom she adopted his name. In 1919 she left Russia, spending two years in Tbilisi and in 1921 she immigrated to France, where she eventually obtained French citizenship. In 1922, they moved to Paris, where there were a large Russian community, of which Rockline became part, living near Montmartre.
In 1922, Rockline exhibited paintings in the Russian section of the Salon d’Automne, at the Salon des Independants and at the Salon Tuileries, where she had a positive reception from media and visitors. Some of her paintings won prizes in the expositions. After styling herself on Cubism and Impressionism, Rockline started to develop her own style, “something between Courbet and Renoir”, according to the critics from L’Art et les Artistes” magazine’.
In 1927, she became member of Salon d’Automne Society, a privileged position and became independent of her husband, probably divorcing him and moved to Montparnasse. Her financial independence coincided with a change in her art style. Her works became lighter, free, closer to Impressionism.
In June 2008, her painting Card Players (1919) was sold in an auction at Christie’s, in London, for 2 million pounds. More on Véra Rockline

Théodore Chassériau, Two half-naked women, 01 Painting, The Art Of The Nude, with footnotes # 140

Deux femmes demi-nues, de dos (esquisse)/ Two half-naked women, back (sketch), c. 1848

Théodore Chassériau (September 20, 1819 – October 8, 1856) was a French Romantic painter noted for his portraits, historical and religious paintings, allegorical murals, and Orientalist images inspired by his travels to Algeria.
Chassériau was born in El Limón, Samaná, in the Spanish colony of Santo Domingo (now the Dominican Republic). In December 1820 the family left Santo Domingo for Paris, where the young Chassériau soon showed precocious drawing skills. He was accepted into the studio of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in 1830, at the age of eleven, and became the favorite pupil of the great classicist, who regarded him as his truest disciple.
After Ingres left Paris in 1834 to become director of the French Academy in Rome, Chassériau fell under the influence of Eugène Delacroix, whose brand of painterly colorism was anathema to Ingres. Chassériau’s art has often been characterized as an attempt to reconcile the classicism of Ingres with the romanticism of Delacroix. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1836, and was awarded a third-place medal in the category of history painting. In 1840 Chassériau travelled to Rome and met with Ingres, whose bitterness at the direction his student’s work was taking led to a decisive break.
In 1846 Chassériau made his first trip to Algeria. From sketches made on this and subsequent trips he painted such subjects as Arab Chiefs Visiting Their Vassals and Jewish Women on a Balcony…
After a period of ill health, exacerbated by his exhausting work on commissions for murals to decorate the Churches of Saint-Roch and Saint-Philippe-du-Roule, Chassériau died at the age of 37 in Paris, on October 8, 1856. More on Théodore Chassériau

Helmut Newton was born on October 31, 1920, in Berlin, Germany. He attended the American School in Berlin. From an early age, Newton developed a keen obsession with photography, purchasing his very first camera aged 12. Four years later, Newton was to turn his back on mainstream education, taking an apprenticeship with renowned German photographer, Elsle Simon, known as Yva. Her surreal, multiple exposure photographs that took in fashion, theater and the nude were to inspire Newton throughout his career.
On November 9, 1938, Newton, secured passage to China, where he stopped in Singapore until 1940 before leaving to Australia and finding work as a truck driver in the Australian Army.
In 1948, he married actress June Browne, herself a photographer under the name of Alice Springs, a name she chose from a map of Australia. High-profile contracts with Australian Vogue in the 1950’s; British Vogue in 1957-1958; French Vogue in 1961 provided Newton with the exposure that would allow him to stamp his style on fashion photography over the next 40 years.
Known as the ‘King of Kink’, Newton’s erotically charged imagery was provocative as it was masterful in its compositional and narrative direction. Creating highly charged images layered with voyeuristic, sado-masochist undertexts, Newton was drawn to empowered woman presenting a potent image of female sexuality in the 60’s and 70’s.
Newton died, aged 83, in 2004 following a major car accident in Los Angeles. More on Helmut Newton

Kasia Derwinska “Photography is my way of communicating with the world. In my work, I talk about own experiences, thoughts, doubts, fears and hopes trying to reflect my own life’s path. In addition to my experiences, my creations are inspired by night dreams as since childhood I remember most of them and I believe that dreams are the most simbolic language of our subconscious, a guide to navigate in the modern world. I am autodidactic and I don´t recognize myself as a photographer. I use photography as a tool, like a brush for painting or an instrument to play music. My work is an attempt to connect substantiality of the world that surrounds us with elusiveness of feelings and thoughts. For that reason I describe my creations as building a bridge between the visible and the invisible. My works are divided in four basic series: fairytales and fantasies, conceptual black and white, night dreams, and the color serie called “who sings, frightens away his fears”  More on Kasia Derwinska

Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres (9 February 1880 – 31 May 1958) was a Belgian painter from Brussels who lived the last part of his life in Bali.

Le Mayeur came to Bali at Singaraja in 1932. He then stayed in Denpasar and was fascinated by what remained then of Balinese culture, including the Balinese people’s traditional way of life, the temple rituals and local dances. He was also impressed by the light, color and beauty of the surroundings in the then still quite unspoilt island.

Le Mayeur got acquainted with 15-year-old legong dancer, Ni Nyoman Pollok, known by her nickname Ni Pollok , who later on became Le Mayeur’s model for his paintings.

After three years working together, in 1935, Le Mayeur and Pollok got married. During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia in World War II Le Mayeur was put under house arrest by the Japanese authorities. He continued painting, however, often painting on rice sack cloth and other surfaces he could find. After the war Le Mayeur’s reputation grew at steady pace.

In 1958 Le Mayeur suffered from a severe ear cancer, and accompanied by Ni Pollok he returned to Belgium to have a medical treatment. After two months in Belgium, on 31 May 1958 the 78-year-old painter died and was buried in Ixelles, Brussels. Ni Pollok then returned home to take care of her house which had become the Le Mayeur Museum. She stayed there until her death on 18 July 1985 at the age of 68.

Le Mayeur and Ni Pollok’s home is kept in its original condition and is a museum where about 80 of Le Mayeur’s works are exhibited. More on Adrien LeMayeur

John Randall Bratby RA (19 July 1928 – 20 July 1992) was an English painter who founded the kitchen sink realism style of art that was influential in the late 1950s. He made portraits of his family and celebrities. His works were seen in television and film. Bratby was also a writer.

John Bratby was born on 19 July 1928 in Wimbledon. Between 1949 and 1950, he studied art at Kingston College of Art. He then began attending the Royal College of Art, completing his studies in 1954. He painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits and figure compositions, and had his first solo exhibition that year at London’s Beaux Arts Gallery.

Bratby is considered the founder of kitchen sink realism, a movement in which artists use everyday objects, like trash cans and beer bottles as subjects of their works, which are often thickly-laden portraits or paintings. It began in the early 1950s and has been considered an aspect of John Osborne’s “Angry Young Men” movement. Bratby often painted with bright colours, capturing his middle-class family’s daily lives.

Bratby was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1971.

Bratby’s own work fell out of favour with the emergence of Pop art. More on John Randall Bratby

Richard Larter (19 May 1929 – 25 July 2014) was an Australian painter, often identified as one of Australia’s few highly recognizable pop artists. Larter also frequently painted in a Pointillist style. He took advantage of unusual techniques with painting: using a syringe filled with paint to create his early works, and juxtaposing multiple images on to a canvas. Many of his works are brightly coloured and draw on popular culture for source materials, reproducing news photographs, film stills, and images from pornography. He was married to Pat Larter, an artist who was involved in the Mail art movement, then performance art and finally painting in a brightly coloured style similar to Richard’s. The Larters emigrated to Australia in 1962. Richard Larter’s pop art was less ironic than his American and English counterparts. In this Larter is similar to other noted Australian pop artists, such as, Mike Brown and Martin Sharp. More on Richard Larter

His father, employed by a firm of Brighton publishers, was a keen naturalist and artist, and took the young Charles on walking and sketching trips, so initiating a love of Sussex. His gift for drawing was further encouraged by trips to France with a childhood mentor, Canon Elliott. Studying first at Brighton School of Art (1919-23), in 1923 he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools and, though commuting from the South Coast, became exposed to many new influences. His discovery of the work of John Sell Cotman was particularly seminal, for it determined his concentration on watercolour, and directed his travels, as well as affecting his early style. .

From 1925, Knight taught at Brighton School of Art, first as a full-time lecturer, and later as a visitor. The forty drawings of the county which he produced for Recording Britain were dubbed the ‘star turn’ of the project by William Russell Flint. During the Second World War, he was reserved by the teaching profession, and returned to full-time teaching at the college, but also worked as a night telephone operator for the Civil Defence and a member of the Home Guard. In 1944, he was asked by the Queen Mother to give Princess Margaret lessons in watercolour painting; his appointment lasted for three years. He continued to teach at Brighton School of Art, and in 1959 became both Vice-Principal and Head of the Drawing and Painting Department. He died on 15 May 1990. More on Charles Knight

Paul Delvaux (23 September 1897 – 20 July 1994) was a Belgian painter famous for his paintings of female nudes. He was influenced by the works of Giorgio de Chirico, and was also briefly associated with surrealism.

The young Delvaux took music lessons, studied Greek and Latin, and absorbed the fiction of Jules Verne and the poetry of Homer. All of his work was to be influenced by these readings, starting with his earliest drawings showing mythological scenes. He studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, attending painting classes taught by Constant Montald and Jean Delville. The painters Frans Courtens and Alfred Bastien also encouraged Delvaux, whose works from this period were primarily naturalistic landscapes.

Delvaux’s paintings of the late 1920s and early 1930s, which feature nudes in landscapes. A change of style around 1933 reflects the influence of the metaphysical art. In the early 1930s Delvaux found further inspiration in visits to the Brussels Fair, where the Spitzner Museum, a museum of medical curiosities, supplying him with motifs that would appear throughout his subsequent work.

In 1959 he executed a mural at the Palais des Congrès in Brussels, one of several large scale decorative commissions Delvaux undertook. He was named director of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in 1965. In 1982 the Paul Delvaux Museum opened in Saint-Idesbald. Delvaux died in Veurne in 1994. More on Paul Delvaux

Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, original name Karl Schmidt, (born December 1, 1884, Rottluff, near Chemnitz, Germany—died August 9, 1976, West Berlin [now Berlin]), German painter and printmaker, noted for his Expressionist landscapes and nudes.

In 1905 Schmidt-Rottluff began to study architecture in Dresden, Germany, where he and his friends formed the organization of Expressionist artists known as Die Brücke (“The Bridge”), united by the goal of creating a modern, intensely emotional style.

Schmidt-Rottluff is particularly known for his rural landscapes. He initially painted in an Impressionist style, but transitioned to his mature style, characterized by flat areas of boldly dissonant colours. Schmidt-Rottluff  began to explore the expressive potential of the woodcut medium. In 1911 Schmidt-Rottluff moved to Berlin, where he painted works with more angular, geometric forms and distorted space, revealing his new interest in Cubism and African sculpture.

After World War I Schmidt-Rottluff became increasingly interested in religious themes. During the 1920s Schmidt-Rottluff’s work became more subdued and harmonious, losing much of its former vigour and integrity. When the Nazis gained power in Germany, he was forbidden to paint. After World War II he taught art and resumed painting, although he never regained the power of his early works. More on Karl Schmidt-Rottluff

Flint’s expressive brushwork builds up the heavy clouds of a summer storm (the artist frequently remarked on the country’s sultry heat) while at the local public-scales women gather, the display of strength and sensuality a hallmark of Flint’s work.

He also worked in oils, tempera, and printmaking. He was born in Edinburgh then educated at Daniel Stewart’s College and Edinburgh Institution. From 1894 to 1900 Flint apprenticed as a lithographic draughtsman while taking classes at the Royal Institute of Art, Edinburgh. From 1900 to 1902 he worked as a medical illustrator in London while studying part-time at Heatherley’s Art School. He furthered his art education by studying independently at the British Museum.
